Dementia & Technology

On Wednesday, October 18th, SciFY, together with the Alzheimer Society of Athens and NCSR Demokritos, held the 21st SciFY Academy at INNOVATHENS on “Dementia & Technology“, where we tried to answer the question, “How does technology help people with dementia?”

Over 120 healthcare professionals, dementia caregivers, and students attended the event, where they watched a seminar focused on practical solutions and tools for caring for individuals with dementia.

Initially, Dr. Paraskevi Sakka, a neurologist and psychiatrist, and the President of the Alzheimer Society of Athens, as well as the President of the National Observatory for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, spoke to us about Alzheimer’s disease, the latest developments, and its impact on Greece today, both socially and economically.

Then, Dr. Eleni Margioti, a Clinical Neuropsychologist from the Alzheimer Society of Athens, discussed non-pharmaceutical interventions in dementia, including mental strengthening, physical exercise, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. See her presentation here.

The event’s third presentation was given by Mr. Vassilis Giannakopoulos, Marketing & Impact Manager of SciFY. He introduced us to the mobile phone application DiAnoia, developed by SciFY, for caregivers of people with dementia.  See his presentation here.

Next, Mr. Nikos Drosos, Project Manager of SingularLogic’s European Projects, discussed how technology assists people with dementia. See his presentation here.

Finally, Dr. Vasiliki Redoumi, a researcher at NCSR Demokritos, spoke with us on the occasion of the European IASIS Project about the developments in personalized medicine for Alzheimer’s. See her presentation here.

After the presentations, participants had the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers, followed by an open discussion with the audience.

As requested by friends from all over Greece, we successfully broadcast the event live, and hundreds of people watched the live stream. For those who were unable to attend the event, you can watch it in its entirety at this link.
