New Materials, Nanotechnology & AI #2: Designing Tomorrow

On Thursday, November 12, 2025, at 19:00, SciFY held the 51st SciFY Academy event on “New Materials, Nanotechnology & AI #2: Designing Tomorrow” at Ιmpact Hub Athens (28 Karaiskaki Street, Athens).

Participation is free and open to everyone!

The aim was to discuss key issues such as:

  • How nanotechnology and ‘smart’ laboratories accelerate the development of new and resilient materials.
  • How 3D printing and printed electronics are opening the way for innovative constructions in robotics.
  • How AI contributes to the design of aeronautical structures.
  • What secrets lie hidden in material surfaces, and how AI helps us harness them in applications ranging from medicine to microelectronics.
  • How component refurbishment and the use of advanced materials provide economic and environmental benefits, as well as support for the local economy.
  • How using AI in the natural sciences helps us make discoveries and innovate.

Initially, Prof. Lazaros Tzounis, Associate Professor at the Hellenic Mediterranean University, Department of Mechanical Engineering, recently elected to the Department of Physics of the University of Ioannina and Director – Founder of the “Laboratory for 3D Printing of Composite Materials, Advanced Structures & Electronic Devices” (CSD-3D Lab), introduced us in simple and understandable language to the world of New Materials and 3D Printing with a multitude of applications such as in the automotive industry, energy, aerospace, robotics, etc. See his presentation here.

Then, Dr. Vassilis Konstantoudis, Principal Investigator of NCSR “Demokritos”, spoke to us about the strange world of surfaces and the role of Artificial Intelligence in its exploration. See his presentation here.

Next, Savvas Orphanidis, PhD, Research Staff at the Laboratory of Advanced and Composite Materials, Nanomaterials, Nano-Processes and Nanotechnology (R-NanoLab) of Sector III, School of Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (Dr. Konstantinos Charitidis), gave the speech “Nanomechanics and Autonomous Laboratories in the Design and Study of New Materials”. See their presentation here.

Then, Dr. Christoforos Rekatsinas, Ph.D., Researcher at NCSR “Demokritos” and co-founder of INSANE Group, gave a talk titled ‘From Theory to Practice: How Artificial Intelligence Shows Us the Way to Developing Resilient and Sustainable Materials in Aeronautics and Energy Production.’ See his presentation here.

In closing, Dr. Niki Vergadou, Researcher B’ at the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of NCSR “Demokritos”, gave a talk entitled “Natural Sciences and Artificial Intelligence: Peculiarities and Challenges”. Watch her presentation here.
