On Thursday, May 26th, SciFY organized a seminar on Bioinformatics at the INNOVATHENS Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub of the Technopolis City of Athens.
Over 100 people attended an introduction to the world of Bioinformatics by Δρ. Artemis Hatzigeorgiou, professor of Bioinformatics at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Thessaly and associate professor at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, in order to get to know about the “Fruitful collaboration of two sciences”.
Initially, Dr. Artemis Hatzigeorgiou referred to the most important steps taken in the field of Bioinformatics. She also discussed research and applied trends connecting the worlds of informatics and biology.
Such trends concern New Generation Sequencing, the use and experimental verification of the function of microRNAs, and the analysis of biological research texts using Natural Language Analysis.
The way bioinformatics helped in work related to, for example, gene editing was also discussed, as well as how IT tools facilitate processes of analysis and retrieval of knowledge related to biology and modern treatments.
Mr. Petros Kaloupis opened the event, talking about his initiative concerning Assistive Technologies. He spoke of the first social network with access for the disabled, DisabledBook. It is a social media with the purpose of connecting, serving, and interacting with all social or voluntary services in Greece or abroad.

A big thank you to Dr. Artemis Hatzigeorgiou, Mr. Petros Kaloupis, INNOVATHENS, and all our friends who attended and participated in the seminar, asking interesting questions and once again contributing to the realization of our vision for the free diffusion of knowledge!
