On Thursday, May 26th, SciFY, together with INNOVATHENS, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub of the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens, organized a seminar on Bioinformatics.
Over 100 people attended an introduction to the world of Bioinformatics by Dr. , professor of Bioinformatics at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Thessaly and associate professor at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, in order to get to know the “Fruitful collaboration of two sciences”.
Initially, Dr. Artemis Hatzigeorgiou referred to the most important steps taken in the field of Bioinformatics. She also discussed research and applied trends connecting the worlds of informatics and biology.
Such trends include New Generation Sequencing, the experimental verification of microRNA function, and the analysis of biological research texts using Natural Language Analysis.
The way bioinformatics helped with work related to, for example, gene editing was also discussed, as were how IT tools facilitate the analysis and retrieval of knowledge related to biology and modern treatments. See her presentation here.
Mr. Petros Kaloupis opened the event, discussing his initiative on Assistive Technologies. He spoke of the first social network with access for the disabled, DisabledBook. It is a social media platform for connecting, serving, and interacting with all social or voluntary services in Greece or abroad.
