Artificial Intelligence & Data in Journalism

This SciFY Academy covered AI and Data as tools and their use across various scientific fields. The first two seminars in the series focused on the role and applications of new technologies and AI in the social sciences and the Humanities.

In September, in the first part of the series, the 24th SciFY Academy on “AI & Data in Journalism”, focused on Journalism. We learned how a journalist can do better and faster research by leveraging open data with the help of AI tools.

The first presentation was by Dr. Michalis Vafopoulos from NCSR Demokritos on Google DNI OpJ, a project that aims to enhance the reuse of open economic data by facilitating search and access to its original source.

Next, Dr. Georgios Petasis, a researcher at NCSR Demokritos and CEO of Intellitech IKE, presented the European research project YourDataStories, which aims to visualize and analyze open government data to understand and use it for transparency and anti-corruption purposes.

Finally, Dr. George Giannakopoulos, CTO of SciFY NPO and researcher at NCSR Demokritos, presented NewSum, an innovative solution for extracting summaries from multiple sources and thousands of news items, enabling fast, efficient information retrieval with references to the sources, while maintaining the possibility of verification. A particularly important feature of NewSum is that it works independently of language, empowering journalists and citizens around the world.

The event was primarily aimed at professional journalists, researchers, and scientists in IT and new technologies, as well as students at IT and journalism schools. As always, the event was also open to anyone interested in the subject matter.

SciFY Academy is a series of educational activities open to all who are interested, organized by the non-profit organization Science For You – SciFY, for the free dissemination of knowledge. According to the 2017 report, there are already 5,000 beneficiaries, and the actions continue.

SciFY, NCSR “Demokritos”, and INNOVATHENS powered by Samsung, held the 24th SciFY Academy on “Artificial Intelligence & Data in Journalism” on Thursday, September 20th, at 19:00, at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub of Technopolis, City of Athens (venue: INNOVATHENS – Gas station 2, Gazi, Athens).
