SciFY Academy Event: Environment & Innovation | Subject: Waste Management

SciFY invites you to the 3rd event of the “Environment & Innovation” series on “Waste Management”. It will take place on Thursday, December 7th, 2023, at 19:00, at INNOVATHENS of Technopolis City of Athens (100 Piraeus Street, Gazi). Representatives of WWF, Harokopio University, and the “DIMITRA” educational organization will talk about the challenges and innovative solutions in waste management.
Participation is free and open to everyone!
A Certificate of Attendance is provided to those who wish it.
We invite you to discuss about:
- Green Innovation in Fashion: New trends in the fashion industry that respect the environment and talk about street fashion.
- Waste Management: How technology, logic, and people combine to achieve sustainable waste management.
- Illegal Landfills: How can active citizens & Artificial Intelligence help?
- Food Waste: The challenges and prospects for the management of the issue.

Through this series of events of the SciFY Academy initiative (October 2023 – December 2023), SciFY aspires to create a discussion platform bringing together representatives of IT, the environment, and citizens. The purpose is to inform and inspire ways for a more sustainable future.
Our goal is to discover together:
- how innovation can bring positive results,
- what’s the role of technology, and what are its limits,
- what the roles of man and society are.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about new technologies, practical tools, and ways to achieve sustainability.

A few words about the speakers:
First, Nikos Pitsoulis, President of the educational organization DIMITRA educational organization, and Dimitrios Zervas, Head of European Programs and Project Manager in the same organization, will talk to us about the fashion industry. More specifically, they will talk about:
- applications of sustainable and environmentally friendly production techniques,
- main trends of the ecological transition of streetwear,
- opportunities for young people who wish to become active in the field of street fashion,
- educational skills that those wishing to navigate the fashion industry and impact its change will need to cultivate.
Then, Achilles Plitharas, Footprint leader of WWF Greece, will talk to us about sustainable waste management. In more detail, he will focus on:
- the innovations that can be exploited.
- the logical framework within which such planning must be included.
Then, Vassilis Sfakianopoulos, Head of the “Save Your Hood” Pan-Hellenic Voluntary Environmental Movement, will speak of the illegal dumping of waste, while also answering the following questions:
- What is the role of the citizen in the fight against illegal waste dumping?
- How can Artificial intelligence and technology in general help?
- How useful would it be to create a platform for this purpose?
In closing, Dr. Christina Chroni, Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics and Sustainable Development at Harokopion University, will talk about food waste prevention. More specifically:
- How much food do we throw away every year, and what are the reasons?
- Why is food waste an environmental, economic, and social scandal?
- What can we do to reduce food waste?
SciFY Academy is a series of educational activities open to all who are interested organized by the non-profit organization Science For You – SciFY for the free diffusion of knowledge. Already, the beneficiaries up to date are more than 10,000, and the actions continue!
