Training of Small and Medium Enterprises in AI and Circular Economy
In AI4GreenSME, we empowered Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) by developing Artificial Intelligence and Circular Economy skills. We encouraged collaboration, lifelong learning, and the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence.
How did we do that?
Through an online training program specially designed for the needs of SMEs that want to enter the digital and green era.
Specifically:
- We defined the competencies that SME executives need to cultivate.
- We developed a detailed training program and trained SME executives to test it in actual conditions and improve it.
- We created collaborative tools.
- We facilitated professional inclusion.

Training of Small and Medium Enterprises in AI and Circular Economy
SMEs cannot respond to modern challenges if they do not develop skills to exploit Artificial Intelligence and Circular Economy.
The project aimed to answer the following needs:
- Strengthening the culture of AI and data management in SMEs:
Increasing acceptance and trust in ΑΙ.
Supporting SME executives in identifying business opportunities.
- Promoting the principles of Circular Economy:
Training professionals in circular and “green” economy tools.
Improving the impact of SMEs on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) indicators.
Skills development of middle-level SME executives.
- Facilitating the transition to the Digital and “Green” Revolution:
Educating professionals and promoting the adoption of their principles.
Applying Machine Learning to Circular Economy Models.
Training of Small and Medium Enterprises in AI and Circular Economy
The available project results are:
- A survey of 5 EU countries and 200 SME representatives was carried out to see their needs in digital and green transformation. (See the full report here)
- We developed educational material that meets the above needs. (See the training topics here)

- Collaborative Activities: Ten interactive sessions brought together SMEs from across Europe, in which SME executives shared their experiences on topics such as AI literacy, data for the circular economy, product design, ethical implications of AI, and business models. Satisfaction was very high, and two-thirds of participants reported a significant increase in their knowledge in the field.
- Micro-credentials & Certification: A robust system of badges and a final Europass-compatible certificate was introduced, ensuring that SME managers can gain verifiable skills recognition aligned with European frameworks.
- Creation of the AI4GreenSME Network: Beyond training, the project laid the foundations for a European community of practice. This network brings together SMEs, chambers of commerce, VET providers, and innovation hubs to exchange experiences and resources. What’s more, a series of best practices on how AI and the circular economy can create synergies is showcased on the project’s website.
