SciFY Academy Event: Technology & Natural Disasters #2 | The role of innovation and AI
Thursday, January 30th, 2025, at 19.00 – 21.00 at Impact Hub Athens (28 Karaiskaki Street, Athens)
Free Participation – Registration Required
Following the increased interest shown in the previous event, Science for You – SciFY invites you to another SciFY Academy event dedicated to resilience against Natural Disasters, “Technology & Natural Disasters #2”, on Thursday, January 30th, at 19:00, at Impact Hub Athens (28 Karaiskaki Street, Athens). Professors and Researchers from NKUA, the Center for Research & Technology Hellas, members of the Hellenic Rescue Team of Attica, as well as the Directorate of Civil Protection of the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace will talk to us about natural disasters & resilience in simple terms.
Participation is free and open to everyone!
Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, as space is limited. Those who wish to attend will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

We invite you to discuss key issues such as:
- What are the natural disasters that threaten our country?
- How does technology help in the prevention and management of natural disasters?
- How is technology used in practice by rescuers?
- How does robotics support disaster response teams?
- How technology can support responders
- to timely information,
- and timely decision-making?

A few words about the speakers and the content:
Initially, Mr. Konstantinos Chouvardas, Director of the Autonomous Directorate of Civil Protection of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region, will talk to us about the contribution of technology to the assessment and management of risk in Natural and Technological disasters. More specifically, he will talk to us about:
- The evolution of technology, Artificial Intelligence, and the change it has brought to prevention.
- The use of remote sensing tools and open data for risk analysis and decision-making support.
- The visualization of information and the use of models for situational awareness at the time of disaster.
- The optimization of coordination actions through the use of innovation.
Then, Dr. Anastasios Dimou, Research Fellow at the Center for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), will discuss robotic technology in the service of first responder teams in disaster response. More specifically, he will talk to us about:
- The use of autonomous vehicles.
- The possibilities and flexibility in their use and the significant advantages in obtaining a complete picture.
- Technical capabilities that were not possible in the past and provide greater safety for emergency response teams.
Professor Emmanuel Vassilakis, Professor of Remote Sensing and Morphotectonics at the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of NKUA, Director of the Remote Sensing Laboratory, will talk to us about innovative technologies in the service of natural disaster prevention and management. More specifically, he will address the following points:
- The natural disasters that threaten our country.
- The contribution of technology to the prevention and management of any natural disaster.
- Examples in Greece.
Finally, on behalf of the Hellenic Rescue Team of Attica (HRTA), we will hear from rescuers with experience in Search & Rescue operations, in particular, Dr. Harris Georgiou, scientific advisor & rescuer (Sea/USAR), Mrs. Anastasia Andriopoulou, Financial Manager & rescuer (USAR) and the Mr. Alexis Vlachopoulos, Research Assistant & rescuer (USAR). In their speech, they will address the following:
- Natural disasters: Technology at the service of the rescuer. Advantages and Disadvantages.
- Tomorrow: New technologies being developed.
- Technology in the future: The use of technology in practice through the eyes of a rescuer.
SciFY Academy is a series of educational activities open to all interested, organized by the non-profit organization Science For You – SciFY, for the free diffusion of knowledge. Already, the beneficiaries up to date are more than 10,000, and the actions continue!
Through the SciFY Academy initiative, SciFY aspires to create a platform for discussion by bringing people from the fields of technology research, knowledge, and exploitation together with citizens, students, and related professionals. The aim is to learn from the recent past and find out what is happening now; to be informed about new technologies, as well as existing ones. To be inspired by scientific achievements and shed a little more light on the issue of natural disasters. Also, to learn about what is happening in Greece today from the most experts. We are waiting for you to discuss the present and future of natural disaster management in Greece.
