How can Greece’s cultural wealth be made accessible to everyone with just a few clicks?

Hundreds of thousands of scientists, educators, researchers, artists, students, and people who love culture visit SearchCulture.gr every year to discover and study elements of our cultural heritage in digital form. However, in order to easily search for a cultural item, especially when it is part of such a large and rich collection, it is not enough for it to simply be digitized. It needs to be accompanied by the appropriate information, so that we can easily locate it and make use of it in education, research, and creation. 

Workers from the “People with Disabilities Pioneers in Artificial Intelligence” program contributed to this effort. As part of a collaboration with the National Documentation Centre, individuals with disabilities trained in data annotation examined digital items depicting animals and added the appropriate content tags. They annotated more than 2,600 items from 20 digital collections. Thanks to their work, the material became easier to search, and was also used to create the new thematic exhibition “The World of Animals”. 

This work highlights how people’s skills can create public value: greater access to knowledge, better use of cultural information, and opportunities for education, research, and creativity.
