AI Pioneers in Natural Disasters

SciFY, in collaboration with the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), trains university students and young scientists in the practical application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the prevention and management of natural disasters, with a focus on Northern Greece and the wider region of Xanthi.

  • We are developing an AI training program for natural disasters, designed for final-year students and recent graduates from various academic fields, with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity.
  • We will provide free training to 100 university students from different scientific fields.
  • We will support 30 of them in solving Challenges to be held at the Democritus University of Thrace, with the contribution of its researchers.
  • We will connect students with scientists and support their networking.

The project draws on SciFY’s experience with successful AI programs and DUTH’s expertise and interdisciplinary approach, addressing a real gap – there is no equivalent initiative in Greece.

The program is part of the award-winning “Pioneers for AI” initiative, which has been recognized for two consecutive years by UNESCO’s IRCAI as one of the top 100 AI projects in the world.

  • Natural disasters, driven by climate change, are and will remain one of the greatest challenges societies will have to face in the coming years.
  • Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing the prevention and management of natural disasters. From predicting fires and floods to coordinating rescue operations and assessing damage, AI can save lives, resources, and infrastructure.
  • However, harnessing it requires scientists who understand it and can apply it across different fields – from natural sciences and engineering to environmental management and humanitarian action.
  • At the same time, centers innovating in disaster resilience are seeking young scientists to staff their initiatives and research, particularly in the regions, where the needs and impacts are more acute.
  • We give students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and increase their employability, while fostering new synergies between universities, researchers, and students for research and innovation in Greece.

The project is still in its early stages; however, initial results are already available:

  • We created a comprehensive AI training program for natural disasters, specifically designed for students from various academic fields, and it is now available. Visit the program’s website.

Furthermore, the project is expected to develop and offer:

  • Free training for 100 students from different scientific fields.
  • Participation of 30 students, selected from those who completed the online course, in the Challenges phase, to be held at the Democritus University of Thrace.
  • Challenges created by researchers from DUTH, so that students can apply their knowledge to real-world problems in the field.
  • Networking opportunities connecting students with leading scientists and research teams.
  • The possibility of incorporating the training material into existing undergraduate or postgraduate study programs.
